Silent Hill Nurse Costume

Here are some pictures from me rocking my Silent Hill nurse costume. :)

How To: Making a Silent Hill Nurse Costume

24 10 2009

Alright, so this was a really fun project. Here is how to make your own Silent Hill Nurse costume for cheap.

The first step is to go pick up the things you will need:

The base of my Silent Hill Nurse costume

The base of my Silent Hill Nurse costume

A “sexy” nurse costume – I bought one of the Leg Avenue costumes
A simple mask
Paint for the mask
Old make up, like eye shadow and foundation
Panty house
Shoes your willing to rough up
soy sauce
flour
newspaper

At the very bottom there is a photo gallery, click on each picture for a larger image and a visual record of making my costume!

Making the nurse dress and hat:

Take the nurse costume and soak it in a mixture of black tea and coffee.  I soaked mine in a giant pot for like a half hour.

Once it is done, hang it somewhere to dry. I hung mine up in my bathroom above the tub. As the costume dries, flick some water on it. This will create discolored spots. Only flick water on it. I mean small amounts.

Now because of the materials that costumes are made out of (you know, the kind of shiny material – maybe it’s polyester?) you can’t wash this, or get it wet. If you do, the color will run right out of it. That’s why you can only use flicks of water, don’t do any more than that.

Once the costume is dry, go through your old make up. You will be using this to dirty up the dress. I used old foundation, blush that was too dark for me, and eye shadows I was never going to use.

For powdered make up, scrape it with a fork or tweezers or something else, just to make it loose. Then spread it across the costume with just your hand or paper towel, working it into the fabric. For liquid make up just drip it on the cloth where ever you see fit, once again smearing it in .

Repeat this process for the front and back, including the hat that comes with the costume.

Now this part is going to sound a little weird, but trust me. Put the costume on some sort of incline, or you may want to hang it up. The take soy sauce a drip it on the costume. Let is run down naturally, and then dab off any extra that doesn’t soak into the costume. This gives the look of old, dried blood really nicely.

Once the make up and soy sauce have dried, take a pair of scissors and fray and rough up all of the edges of the costume.

Yay! The dress portion of your costume is now done!

The Mask

The mask really was a learning experience for me. I had no clue what I was doing when I started. It was still fun though.

Start by getting everything ready to paper mache. I would lay down some newspaper or trash bag to protect your surface. This can get messy. Once your area is set up, tear newspaper into strips, no more than an inch wide, and some pieces being smaller than that. For the paste mix I used a simple two part water to one part flour mixed that worked quite well.

You will need at least 3 layers of paper mache, so this will take some time. For the first layer, dip the newspaper in the glue mix and shake of any extra glue. Lay it across the mask. Repeat this process until the entire mask is covered. Once you’re done, let is dry. This can take up to 24 hours.

This is where things start getting hard. You have to get a idea of what you want your mask to look like now. I didn’t really do that, and as you can tell from the pictures. Mine sort of evolved over time. IF you already know what you want your mask to look like you would start laying down the ground work here on the second layer.

The one thing I can tell you is to get texture, it’s a nice idea to pinch together or lump newspaper where you want higher or raised portions now. It doesn’t matter how it looks, because you can smooth it out by adding paper on top of it with the next layer.

So, just keep repeating the add paper mache – let it dry sequence until you have something you like.

Once that is done you paint it. I just used some normal paint for crafts, acrylic paint. Now, my mask turned out really dark. I tried to paint it once with lighter colors, which are more accurate to the reference I was using, but looked horrible. I am not a painter by any means. I decided on going with a dark mask, not because it was accurate, but it looked better and was easier to do with my painting skills. Feel free to paint it whatever colors you see fit. It is your mask after all.

Now, Silent Hill nurses don’t have eyes. I do. To make my eyes little harder to see I hot glued panty hose on the inside of my mask over the eye holes. Simply cut a square piece of panty hose, stretch it, and hot glue it in place.

Now you’re mask is done.

Shoes:

Now shoes are really up to you. The nurses in the movie and Silent Hill: Homecoming both wear heels, which is what I chose to go with. I didn’t have a pair of white heels so I just spray painted a pair of black ones white. I then used a left over paint from the mask to rough them up a bit.

Make-up:

Now I haven’t done a full costume run yet. That means including make up. The nurses are covered with veins. I plan to have them all over my body, including legs.

Now, I’m not posting a picture of me in the costume yet, because I want the first view of me in it to be in person. Now I know not everyone cane see me in person for Halloween, so I will be posting a picture up after going out.

Hope you enjoy making your own costume!

Magician Spotlight – Danny Rudnick

16 09 2009

by a very young hearted Tara

Thoughts from a (Girl) Gamer would like to take a break from our normal video game related content with this special presentation.

Magician Danny RudnickThis is something totally different for Thoughts from a (Girl) Gamer. We’ve covered a lot, but until now “magicians” wasn’t something on our list. But why haven’t we? I have no idea. Why would we? Well, now I know that. We would because they make us smile, make us feel like kids again, and are pretty much awesome all around, just like video games! So here for our first (and to be honest probably our only) Magician Spotlight – we have DANNY RUDNICK!

So, here is a brief bio on Danny, followed by some of his performances:

Danny Rudnick has been performing magic since he was 5 years old. He is currently attending the University of Illinois, but also spends a lot of time in his hometown of Chicago.

In the Champaign/Urbana area, you may have seen him performing at The Clybourne, Firehaus, Dallas & Co., in random lecture halls, and possibly even heard him doing magic over the radio on WPGU!

In Chicago, he works at the world famous Magic, Inc., the country’s oldest family owned magic shop.  While there, he demonstrates magic for customers, reviews magic tricks (new and old), and is currently in the works creating and producing his own original magic tricks!

Danny is an awesome performer and easy to like. I met him back when I went to U of I. We had a chemistry lab together and he would perform tricks for us in our down time. It was super awesome. I’m sure you’re wanting to see some, so first here is a video I took when I met up with Danny last week.

This is the kind of magic I love seeing Danny do, the one on one tricks. He does these for me all the time. In this video he manages to shrink the card I’m holding onto… it’s pretty nifty.

This is a nifty rope trick that I absolutely love.

In this video Danny magically switches a card with a card from another deck. There is some slight camera wonkiness but I promise that it doesn’t have anything to do with the trick. Danny’s magic is meant to be performed live.

As mentioned earlier Danny loves performing in person. We will always let you know when he is performing in the area but you could always check out the Magician Danny Rudnick Facebook page for the latest updates and contact information (in case you would like to have him perform!). I totally recommend you get a hold of him. I had him perform at my 20th birthday. He swapped out the card I had picked out with another card… while my card was in my bra… with out my knowledge. It was awesome.

Oh, during our meeting we did discuss a little bit of video games -

Tara: So, you are being interviewed for a video game site. So I have to ask… do you play video games?

Danny: I more like to watch other people play. That way it’s like a movie, but now when I yell at the characters on screen, they do what I want them to.

So there you go, our first ever Magician Spotlight. Hope you enjoyed it. I know I loved watching him perform tricks for me. :)

Spore meets Zelda?

6 04 2009

by Tara

So, while browsing the internet today I found this amusing video. People had been using the Spore Creature Creature to make creatures from the Zelda series. One person, with a Youtube account and way too much free time, compiled all of them together and set it to Zelda music.  You can tell people put a lot of work into all of their creatures. Volvagia (fire dragon boss from Ocarina of Time) looks exceptionally cool. It’s at 3:21. The only one that really turned out “badly” is Wolf Link and Midna… which is just hysterical looking – 5:42.

Sex Sells

5 04 2009

by Tara

tara11Yeah, that picture is of me. Did it get your attention? I hoped it did, because that is all it is there for. I put that picture there because sex sells. Sex sells everything, and yes, that includes video games. If it didn’t Tera Patrick wouldn’t be involved in the DLC for Saint’s Row 2. If it didn’t the girl on girl sex scene in Mass Effect wouldn’t have been a big deal. It was though, because sex sells… big time.

This happens to put girl gamers in an awkward place. We want your attention and are trying hard to get it, legitimately. We write articles, reviews, walkthroughs… We kick your ass on XBox Live and even help develop the games you play.We explain that we are legit as any other gamer and we’re all the same, just with different equipment. But you don’t hear us, and that’s where things go down hill.

Like I said, sex sells. Sex sells a lot. To make matters worse, there are people who understand that they can use it to get attention. There are girls, who play games, who use it to get attention. As a friend of mine recently said, “Success in a capitalist society is determined by number of hits on the site, and midriffs generate traffic.” You can see where this is headed.

While looking for a banner for the site, I learned that google image searching “gamer girl” is not safe for work, especially if you don’t have safe search enabled. Most of the pictures that pop are naked women with conveniently placed controllers or game cartridges. To make matters worse, on the first page there was Raychul, the inspiration, or more appropriately the frustration, that led to me making this site. (If you don’t know what I am taking about see my bio page.)

I won’t lie, I was curious as to what Raychul was up to this time. So, I followed the link. The first image that pops up is the little blondie herself with her hand and a Guitar Hero guitar over her breasts. The first lines of text under her picture are “Raychul Moore loves to be scared, she loves video games, and was stoked this year when she went to the Adult Entertainment Expo and got her boob licked by her favorte porn star.” Raychul’s article was full of pictures, but no worth while content. I had just wasted five minutes of my life.

It really sickened me. It’s sad the girls getting the attention are the ones flashing their chests and not the ones saying something worth listening to.

There are a lot of things that you can say in response to people like Raychul. Can they really be satisfied knowing that their site is being visited because of their bodies and not their content? Is it really okay to seduce people into hearing their thoughts? Is it worth degrading the name of all girl gamers every where to get website hits? Probably not… but in the end, none of it really matters. Sex will always sell and there is no way to stop anyone from using their body the way girls like Raychul do. It does bring up some interesting thoughts though.

There is a ton of stuff on the internet. What am I supposed to do to get my stuff noticed with people like Raychul around? Pay for advertisements? Spam emails to people? Or fight fire with fire and show off my body? It just makes my head spin as even more thoughts start creeping into my head.

Is it okay to flash some skin to grab someone’s attention and then hold their attention with real, full, interesting content? Should I use being a girl to my advantage? Should I move some of my personal boundaries so I can grab your attention? What if I posted the picture I have above as my site banner? Would I resent girls like Raychul so much if what they what had to say beneath their half naked pictures was actually worth reading? Should I become one of them for attention?

I don’t think it’s something that I am going to do…  again… after this article that is. I’d rather show you the faces of the girl gamers trying to get your attention. They’re interesting and fully clothed.

l_8dfc6f4c7efb4277a9ad25b5e88578e71m_9343928bd1ccab0c750be88a83fe6f862l_092b139e186fb0604e88a722f4c26fec2

I’d rather give the more modest (and most likely more intelligent) ladies the voice they need.

I know that sex sells, but I’m not ready to to sell out and join that crowd. Although I hope my picture above grabbed your attention, I really hope that this article is what kept it. I hope that I have raised your consciousness and you’ll look beyond pictures to explore what really matters; content.

PETA is Up in Arms

1 04 2009

by Abril Primero- broma

Everyone knows that PETA loves to pick a fight. One of their more recent campaigns included an effort to change how fish were referenced. They insisted that instead they be called “sea kittens” so they appear more cute and cuddly. I guess it’s easier to find supporters that want to “save” cute and cuddly sea kittens than it is a scaly, offensive looking, scary fish.

real_sea_kitten

What does this have to do with the gaming industry you ask? Well this morning Volition studio, makers of Saints Row 2 and the soon to be release Red Faction: Guerrilla, leaked this video on the internet.

Confused on why PETA would be so offended by what clearly is an April Fool’s joke? Well so was everyone else. That’s why Ingrid Newkir made this announcement shortly after the video had been release on Kotaku.

peta_prez“I am very disturbed by many things in life, especially those involving animals and animal cruelty. PETA has been working hard to give animals a voice. With so many people today looking for ways to reduce the amount of suffering in the world, we hope that you will help us show your audience how easy it is to bring comfort to the smallest and most helpless among us-animals. A big part of this will simply be getting the message out there and changing how uneducationed people view and treat those who cannot have a voice for themselves. PETA has been trying to spread our message through the internet, speeches and public protests… but there has been one area that we have barely touched on… animals in video games. With their latest “April Fool” joke, Volition has shown that they have no respect for animals. They show an emu being used as a bludgeoning weapon in their game. People need to respect animals, and clearly Volition does not. Please stand with me, and the rest of PETA, and protest this game simulated animal abuse. Animals need to be protected and nurtured, no matter where they are, even if this includes the digital world. Thank you in advance for helping us make a difference in the lives of so many by spreading the message of compassion and respect for all animals.”

Newkir continued on to say something along the effect of animal violence is never a joke, and that she was personally offended that Volition would release a video making fun of animal being used for abuse, while being abused at the same time.

Volition of THQ representatives have yet to release a statement on the subject, although it is very unlikely that they will. I  honestly don’t think that they care in the slightest.

So a lot of peolpe who have read this have been asking me if this was actually true. The sea kittens campaign is something PETA actually did and the video really was leaked by Volition as a joke. The PETA speech about animal cruelty in games is made up. This whole thing is an April Fool’s day joke.  I would also like to point out the  Abril Primero- broma is a name up name that when translated into Spanish literally says “April First-joke.” :)

I’m giving out an Award!

27 03 2009

by Tara

A lot of sites have granted themselves the ability to bestow awards as they see fit. I have decided that they if can do it, I can do too. Also, I will do it more awesomely with more awesome awards.

The first award from Thoughts From a (Girl) Gamer is the “Most Beloved in the Ginger Feline Community” award. This honor is received by those who exhibit a great appreciation for cuddly cats and kittens.

Tonight’s winner is MIKE DEBONIS!

image001

Mike first was first introduced to the cat community by befriended Leon and Harshil cat. He played with them and accepted Harshil despite her weight problem. Mike has gained favor in the cat community by introducing me to “Cat on a Keyboard in Space” which is the source of all happiness in the world. For reference see the video below.

Mike has also been quoted as saying he can’t wait to become my roommate because once he is, he will always have a Leon cat to meet him at the door when he comes home.

Good job Mike, and well done.

I’m Ready Now – Kaitlyn Conley

There are a lot of things in life that I like, but very few are comparable to this next video.

I love Silent Hill and I love dance, and this next one combines the two. Kaitlyn is an amazing dancer who worked some jerky and contorted movements into her routine below, which also has some amazing technique in it.

You can’t watch 1:45-1:49 and 2:40-2:45 and not tell me see is channeling a Silent Hill nurse.
